Message from the President

Being a member of an RSL Youth Club is more than just attending dancing or gymnastics  lessons it is an opportunity to participate and socialise with peers and members of the local community. It is vital that we maintain our strong ties to the local community and RSL Club, by participating in RSL Marches and Commemoration Services to give all members a sense of history and to share in the ANZAC tradition. As you will see some of our members have represented their Youth Club with great pride at services and marches both locally and in New Zealand .

Canterbury Hurlstone Park R.S.L Youth Club has once again been invited to participate in the    Salvation Army’s Red Shield Door Knock Appeal.  The Red Shield Appeal is a nationwide  fundraising appeal that supports meet the needs of many community service programmes, such as beds for the homeless , meals for the hungry , food vouchers, counselling & support  for youth addicted to drugs or alcohol.  By assisting with Door Knock Appeal the Youth Club maintains its commitment to the local community.

Commemoration Sunday & ANZAC Day

We enjoyed a great Commemoration Sunday Service with the sun peeking through for the march and service at Bert Crook Memorial. Our members braved the cold and rain to attend the ANZAC Day March in the city with some members returning to our Club for the sunset service where the rain held off until just after the wreath laying.

New Zealand Reciprocal Tour 2011

Saturday 30th April saw the return of the reciprocal tour, our members were exhausted, tears flowed as they said goodbye to their new friends for life but they were also excited with tales of their wonderful adventure.

Our representatives were Jessica Foley, Natasha Klansek, Katelyn Power, Kristie Vranjkovic, Madeleine Whitby.  From all the lead up camps, meetings, rehearsals and the farewell concert our girls have received nothing but praise for the way they represented our Youth Club. Special mention and thanks to Francesca Mooney who has waved good-bye to both her girls on  previous tours and who was now able to experience the tour as an assistant chaperone. The next few pages are dedicated to their journey.

The New Zealand Reciprocal Tour of 2011 definitely tops my list of most amazing life  experiences and I wish I could repeat it all over again. After months of rehearsals and camps, the tour was finally here, commencing on the 16th of April. Throughout the two weeks, my friendships bloomed as I got closer to the 29 members of our tour group and made many new friends with those living in New Zealand. It certainly was one of the most memorable            experiences that I would never want to forget.

The two weeks was pretty much packed with activities and excitement as we were always doing something and on the go. One of my most enjoyable activities of the tour was when we went to Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park, and made it just in time for the lion feeding, which some members came back with blood all over their polo shirts, after standing near the people throwing the horse meat to the lions. We also were lucky enough to have the opportunity to pat a lion cub, which was the most adorable thing ever! After that we just spent the rest of the afternoon, exploring the rest of the zoo, and visiting and feeding the other animals such as sheep, donkeys, llamas, chickens, goats, rams, wallabies and many more. That night we went to the Rotorua R.S.A for dinner, and the locals asked us what we were doing there, which we  replied for dinner, to which they asked “Don’t they feed you in Australia?”.

Anzac Day was a very moving experience of the tour, as it made me feel proud of my Australian heritage and made me realise even more just how much both Australian and New Zealand soldiers gave up in order to fight to defend our countries. Waking up at 4am to do the Dawn Service, and 3 parades that day was certainly worthwhile participating in. The pride and respect everyone showed towards the ANZACs was truly an unforgettable moment.

The friendships I made through the tour are ones that I will cherish forever, as it didn’t matter where we were but who we were with that made the tour so special. I would also like to particularly thank Andrew Bower, Lisa McCarthy and the Youth Club Committee for giving me the opportunity to be apart of this Tour, as it was a true honor to represent our Club.
